Extract Biographical Notes

1923 - 1925 Born 1923 in Lismore , New South Wales . Family moves to Tully and later Murwillumbah.
1935 - 1940 Family moves to Brisbane and then back to Tully. Attends the girls school, Somerville House. Art lessons with Carol Baker.
1941 Enrols in art classes at Brisbane Technical College  
 
1942 - 1943 Moves to Sydney and enrols at East Sydney Technical College .  
1944 - 1947 Graduates from East Sydney Technical College . Wins Mosman Art Prize.  
1948 Stays with Donald Friend in Hill End. First solo exhibition held at Macquarie Galleries.  
1949 William Dobell's portrait of her wins Archibald Prize. Travels to England , then Paris . Attends classes at Academie de la Grande Chaumiere.  
1950 - 1952 Travels to Spain and Brittany , Venice , Lisbon and London .  
1953 Returns to Australia after father dies. Lives in Brisbane  
1954 She and Donald Friend travel by jeep to far north Queensland staying in Cairns and on Magnetic Island . Travels to New Guinea and spends a month painting on Quatto Island  
1958 Wins Lismore Art Prize.  
1959 Opens antique shop in Brisbane .  
1960 - 1963 Does a number of figure paintings with Aboriginal girls as subjects. Wins Helena Rubinstein Portrait Prize, Redcliffe Art Prize, Bendigo Art Prize and Finney's Centenary Art Prize.  
1964 Wins Johnsonian Club Art Prize.  
1965 - 1968 Wins the Redcliffe Art Prize. Travels three times to New Guinea , travels by canoe up the Sepik River with artist Douglas Annand.  
1969 Travels to Malaysia , Thailand , Cambodia and Bali .  
1971 Travels through Bali , Hong Kong , India , Iran , Turkey and Athens before spending three months in the Moya Drying Studio at Cite Internationale des Arts, Paris . Travels to the south of France . Morocco and Madrid and returns to Australia . Does a series of paintings in David Strachan's house.  
1972 Exhibition 'Homage' of paintings done while staying in Strachan's house.  
1973 - 1975 Divides her time between Sydney , Brisbane and Newcastle . Travels to London , the south of France , Spain and attends a Miro exhibition in Paris .  
1976 - 1977 Travels to London . Visits Amsterdam , Bruges , Brussels and Paris for Chardin exhibition. Visits Venice , Florence and Jeffrey Smart in Arrezo.  
1978 - 1979 Stays at Moya Drying Paris studio. Travels to Strasbourg for Bonnard exhibition. Tours through France .  
1980 Family home, Fardon, in Brisbane , burns down. Travels to London . Visits Paris , Florence and Balthus exhibition in Venice , then Athens and Mykinos.  
1981 V isits Thailand , India and Sri Lanka . Later goes to United States and sees Morandi retrospective.  
1983 Travels to the Philippines and Burma . Later travels to London , Majorca , Barcelona and Paris for the Manet retrospective.  
1984 Visits Paris for Bonnard retrospective and New York for the Balthus exhibition.  
1985 Travels to Victoria Falls , Greece and Egypt .  
1987 Travels to New York and Washington to see exhibitions covering last period of Van Gogh and Nice period of Matisse.  
1988 Starts to donate works of art to public collections. Travels to Beijing , Leningrad , Moscow , London , Bruges , Paris and Rome .  
1990 Retrospective at National Trust S.H. Ervin Gallery. Establishes Margaret Hannah Olley Art Trust to buy works for public collections.  
1991 Awarded Honorary Doctorate of Letters by Macquarie University and appointed Officer (AO) Order of Australia. Travels to Korea and Japan .  
1992 Flies to New York for Matisse retrospective. In May, tours through Germany and visits Prague and travels on to the United Kingdom .  
1994 Solo exhibition in London . Sees Poussin and Derain exhibitions in Paris  
1995 Visits London and Paris to see Cezanne retrospective and exhibitions of Giorgione, Titan and Matisse.  
1996 Travels to see Degas exhibition in London , Corot in Paris and Vermeer in The Hague . Retrospective at the Art Gallery of New South Wales , Sydney .  
1997 Declared an Australian National Treasure. Made Life Governor of the Art Gallery of New South Wales .  
1998 Travels to London for Bonnard exhibition.  
1999 Solo exhibition at Nevill Keating Pictures Ltd, London . Achievers Award from Federal Government. Awarded Honorary Doctorate of Letters by the University of Queensland .  
2000 Co-curator with Barry Humphries of 'Favourites' exhibition at National Trust S.H. Ervin Gallery. Flies to London via Cairo for group exhibition. Awarded Honorary Doctorate of Visual Arts by the University of Sydney .  
2001 Art Gallery of New South Wales names The Margaret Olley, Twentieth Century European Gallery.
